Kopeshwar Temple:
LiDAR Documentation

Located in Khidrapur (near Kolhapur) in Maharashtra, the Kopeshwar temple is a stunning example of ancient Indian temple architecture. The collection of sculptures at the temple is impressive, including those of gods and goddesses, celestial beings, animals, and mythical creatures, each intricately detailed and meticulously crafted.

The project used LiDAR scans to document many of the sculptures at Kopeshwar. The non-invasive use of the technology allowed the creation of digital replicas of the sculptures, aiding in conservation efforts and providing invaluable data for research and restoration purposes.

The Swargmandap at the Kopeshwar Temple in Khidrapur is an architectural marvel with its open, circular hall and intricately carved stone pillars depicting deities and mythological scenes.

The temple's open ceiling, or oculus, allows sunlight to flood the interior, and on auspicious days like Mahashivaratri and Kartik Purnima, the moon aligns perfectly with the oculus, casting its light directly into the center.

LiDAR scanning allows the documentation of this spectacular architectural feature and produces plans at different levels. It also yields a perfectly scaled 3D model of the space that can be used to study the various architectural elements.
